Medical Needs of a Region The WWAMI program was born out of need: the need for medical students to learn medicine in the community, where it is practiced, and a need for adequate medical care in rural parts of the western United States. While the Northwest encompasses over one quarter of the landmass of the nation, these states have very small populations which cannot financially support medical schools. Most medical students leave their home states and do not return to practice medicine after their education is completed. Based on these needs for care and practice, the University of Washington Medical School helped establish WWAMI, a community-based medical education program. The program takes its name from the five participating states: Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. Objectives of WWAMIThe WWAMI program was created with two main objectives:
WWAMI on UWTV As UWTV is available for free satellite downlink, any rural area that can receive the signal can transmit its programming.
