Open Source: New Religion or Viable Business Model?
The series continues with an exploration of the history, challenges, and opportunities of open source vs. proprietary software. Open source proponents hail it as the future of the software and computing world, citing its ability to cheaply provide users with adaptable and secure technology services, while utilizing the cumulative knowledge of large groups of programmers. Opponents of open source are quick to point out that the total cost of ownership is much higher than the simple acquisition cost; furthermore, they claim that the open source framework is ill-equipped to provide effective training, technical assistance, and acceptance of responsibility for errors.
