Human Computation: Channeling Human Brainpower
Tasks like image recognition are trivial for humans, but continue to challenge even the most sophisticated computer programs. Traditional methods to solving such problems focus on improving software. In this program, Luis von Ahn, Carnegie Mellon University, introduces a novel approach: constructively channeling human brainpower using computer games to solve problems that computers cannot yet solve. Von Ahn describes several examples of games with a purpose: Peekaboom, Verbosity, and the popular online ESP Game. He also talks about his work on CAPTCHAs, automated tests that humans can pass but computer programs cannot.
