RSS Basics
Accessing the UWTV RSS Feeds - Quick Start
What
is RSS?
RSS (“Really Simple Syndication” or “Rich
Site Summary”) allows
online content, such as news headlines, to be easily distributed.
Through the use of an “RSS
news reader” desktop application or web-based “RSS
aggregator,” content
from multiple sources can be viewed through a single interface.
The format is rapidly gaining popularity among news providers,
businesses and other organizations such as the New York Times,
Wall Street Journal, CNN, Wired, Salon, Amazon.com and many, many
others. Feeds are often identified on Web sites by an orange rectangular
icon ( ).
How does
RSS help me?
Simply put, it saves you time. At a single
glance you can peruse news headlines, weblogs and other
information from several (or several dozen) Web sites
much more efficiently than visiting each individually.
How do I access
RSS feeds?
You must either install RSS reader software or have access
to a Web site that acts as an RSS aggregator. Which one should
you choose? It’s simply a matter of preference.
Generally speaking, web-based aggregators are relatively easy
to set up and allow you to read your feeds at any networked computer,
PDA or web-enabled phone. Bloglines and
the RSS module of MyYahoo! are
two free providers.
Desktop-based reader software, such as freely-downloadable Pluck, SharpReader (both
for Windows) and NetNewsWire (Mac)
benefit from greater customizability and additional features, including
the ability to alert you to new headlines or items. They are a
great option if you are comfortable with installing new software.
Some web browsers, such as Firefox, Safari and Opera,
have RSS capabilities built in. Internet
Explorer currently requires extensions to add RSS features.
Also, some email clients like Thunderbird support RSS.
There are literally hundreds of other aggregators and readers
to select from. Search for “RSS Reader” in your favorite
search engine, or check this
list as a starting point. You’re bound to find one that
works best for you.
Can
I use Internet Explorer or Microsoft Outlook to access RSS
feeds?
Pluck adds
RSS support to Internet Explorer version 6 (Windows)
and above. Currently, Internet Explorer cannot directly
access an RSS feed without having a plug-in/helper
installed.
For Microsoft Outlook users, a commercially-available product
called NewsGator allows
users to read feeds within the mail client.
